The Ely/Caerau Festival 2017 – Hart of Ely and Caer Heritage Project
On Saturday 8th July the Hart of Ely project took part in the 2017 Ely/Caerau Festival in Cardiff. The festival is a yearly week-long series of events, culminating in a parade. On Saturday the festival took the form of a fair, with live music, food and fairground games, and stalls set up by local businesses and charities.
The Hart of Ely project put up a stall with ACE, alongside the Caer Heritage project . Run by Ian Dennis, Michael Legge and Martin Wienel from Cardiff University, and Phil Jenkins from the Men in Sheds, our stall featured antler artefacts made by Ian, real deer skins from different species, flyers on native British deer, and antler usage through time, and more!
We even had ring and pendant making demonstrations live, with some lucky festival-goers getting to take home their creations, free of charge!
The day was a huge success, with over 480 visitors to the combined HOE and Caer Heritage stalls. The public were wonderful, and we were very grateful to be able to share our knowledge with them; with any luck we will have inspired some future archaeologists, antler workers and deer fanatics!
